For those who may not be familiar with the role of an elementary School Counselor: School Counselors work within the schools to help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to the issues they face. To support these goals, we use the Second Step curriculum in elementary schools across the HCS district. If you would like more information, please visit www.secondstep.org.
To serve our students, our conselor offers individual counseling, small group counseling, and large group counseling (also known as guidance class, where we use the Second Step curriculum). Individual counseling is offered on a “short-term” basis and can be used to help students with coping skills, emotion regulation, and other useful tools/techniques to help students be the best learners they can be throughout the school day and beyond. Small group counseling is a way for students to gather with their peers and learn about subjects such as social skills, conflict resolution, time management, etc. Many students benefit from this fun opportunity by building connections and learning to work with others. This year, in order for your student to receive any of the services listed above, you will have to complete an “opt-in” form.
